Fstoppers Reviews the Fujifilm X-T4: A Deviation

In a release cycle reminiscent of certain other manufacturers, Fujifilm decided to replace their flagship X-T series camera in 18 months rather than the usual 2 years. With a smattering of feature updates, a new battery, and a couple of cosmetic changes, is it really worth the upgrade from the X-T3? Let’s find out.

This review will be taken from the perspective of someone who has owned an X-T1, two X-T2s, an X-H1, and an X-T3. You could say I’m an addict. The other thing to note is that I’m a full time stills photographer. About once or twice a year, I’ll be asked to shoot a video, but my main use for these cameras is stills, so we won’t be taking a deep dive into the changes for video work. With that out of the way, let’s take a look at the heavy hitting features of the X-T4

RED Komodo Update – Price, Pre-Release Custom-Color Version, PDAF

Gear  Comments Off on RED Komodo Update – Price, Pre-Release Custom-Color Version, PDAF
May 212020

RED Komodo is getting close to its release. While we still don’t have final confirmed specs of the camera, we now know the price will be around $7.000 for Stormtrooper (white) edition and around $6.000 for the regular black version which comes after that. Before Stormtroopers, RED will ship limited custom-colored Komodos for $7.000 or slightly above that. According to Jarred Land, this will happen already on June 1st, 2020.

RED Komodo Stormtrooper version will cost around $7.000 Source: RED

When hunting for new information about RED Komodo, in addition to REDuser.net, Jarred’s social media accounts seem to be the right place. Recently, Jarred Land, president of RED Digital Cinema, posted some useful information regarding RED Komodo on his Instagram account.

It has been a while since we last posted an update on RED’s latest compact cinema camera. Since then, there have been a few interesting updates, so let’s get into it.

RED Komodo – Sale Starts with Limited Pre-Release Colored Version

In his post on Instagram, Jarred wrote that the production of RED Komodo is back on track after the interruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the new safety protocols, it is, however, going much slower. Jarred further wrote that in two weeks, RED will start selling the first batch of cameras in “super limited low quantities”. The post was written on May 17, so I suppose this will start on June 1, 2020 (as May 31 is a Sunday).

Hands On with the Fuji X-T4: Trying the IBIS, 240fps Slow Motion, and More

Gear, Mirrorless  Comments Off on Hands On with the Fuji X-T4: Trying the IBIS, 240fps Slow Motion, and More
Feb 282020

I didn’t have a terribly long time with Fujifilm’s latest hybrid shooterbefore it was released—it was only about a week for what you see shot below—but thankfully, not too much has changed since the previous X-T3, and what has is obvious and easy to evaluate.

Compared to the X-T3, the X-T4 is still weather resistant, still shoots 10-bit 4k internal F-Log at 60p, and maintains much of what made its predecessor great. Fuji has simply added a few things that make it an even better tool for the hybrid creators like myself.

These additions are what I’d like to discuss. Furthermore, given my rather limited experience with the new gear, I want to keep these initial thoughts succinct.

Canon EOS Rebel T8i Announced – the Entry-Level DSLR Is Still Alive

Gear  Comments Off on Canon EOS Rebel T8i Announced – the Entry-Level DSLR Is Still Alive
Feb 132020

Alongside the announcement of the impressive Canon EOS R5, Canon also introduced a new entry-level DSLR camera: the Canon EOS Rebel T8i, also known as EOS 850D for European shooters. This new DSLR camera features the same 24.1MP APS-C CMOS image sensor as its predecessor, the Rebel T7i, and is seen by many as Canon’s commitment to its line of DSLR cameras with EF-mounts. Let’s take a closer look at it!

Canon EOS Rebel T8i – a T7i Revamp?

The Canon EOS Rebel line of cameras originally came out in 2003 with the Digital Rebel/300D. But, some of you probably remember more of the Rebel T2i/550D that came out in 2010 (here’s my colleague Nino’s review of the T2i/550D from 2010). Indeed, the T2i featured the same image sensor as the EOS 7D. Also, it was one of the first affordable DSLR cameras capable of shooting 1080P videos. Fast-forward ten years ahead with the recent announcement of the Canon EOS Rebel T8i.

A Comprehensive Review of the Sony a7R IV

A Comprehensive Review of the Sony a7R IV

The Sony a7R IV brings the company’s latest innovations and improvements to the popular line of high-resolution full frame cameras. Along with its new sensor come a bevy of new upgrades and refinements to existing features, making it an interesting choice for a lot of photographers. This comprehensive and thorough review takes a deep look at the camera to help you decide if it is right for you.

Coming to you from Maarten Heilbron, this excellent review takes a look at the Sony a7R IV. The a7R IV features lots of upgrades over the a7R III, the most prominent being the new 61-megapixel sensor, an upgrade of almost 50% over its predecessor. Along with the new sensor comes a better EVF, more ergonomic grip, more powerful autofocus, better weather-sealing, and more. The capability to fire at 10 fps at 61 megapixels is certainly a boon for many photographers, particularly wildlife photographers, who retain vast cropping capabilities with enough speed to capture animals in action, all supplemented by the capable autofocus system.

SIGMA fp Pricing Revealed – A Sub-$2,000 Full Frame Camera With RAW Capabilities

Cinematography, Gear  Comments Off on SIGMA fp Pricing Revealed – A Sub-$2,000 Full Frame Camera With RAW Capabilities
Oct 102019

Back in July, we reported about the launch of the SIGMA fp full-frame camera. We visited the SIGMA factory in August, we asked questions about it at this years IBC in September and we posted about the official release of highly accurate 3D models of the camera and its available accessories in order to create an even further expanded pool of custom accessories. But one thing remained in the dark and that’s the price of the fp camera. Now the company spilled the beans and here it is: The SIGMA fp will be yours for $1,899 US. Preorders are open as we speak

SIGMA fp

The SIGMA fp is not your average pocket-sized point’n’shoot camera. It’s kind of two cameras in one and it sports a full frame sensor. You can choose between a dedicated cine mode as well as a stills mode, accessible via a hardware switch right on the top plate of the camera, no more menu digging! That’s a lot of functionality inside this tiny body and it’s a fresh apporach of tackling all these menu settings and controls for both, stills and cine applications.

Nikon to Release Z50 Mirrorless APS-C Camera and Two Lenses Soon: Report

Cinematography, Mirrorless  Comments Off on Nikon to Release Z50 Mirrorless APS-C Camera and Two Lenses Soon: Report
Sep 232019

It looks like Nikon is preparing to enter the mirrorless APS-C market and take on Sony’s a6000 series cameras. According to a breaking report from this morning, Nikon is planning to release the “Z50” APS-C mirrorless camera and two lightweight DX-format mirrorless lenses “soon.”

The report, published by Nikon Rumors this morning, claims that the Nikon Z50 will feature a 20MP APS-C image sensor, 3-inch “pivoted” LCD, and the ability to shoot bursts up to 11fps. If accurate, it seems Nikon is adopting a Z”XX” naming convention for APS-C mirrorless, and Z”X” scheme for full-frame mirrorless.

Nikon, Leica and Olympus are Not Going to Attend Photokina 2020

Gear, News  Comments Off on Nikon, Leica and Olympus are Not Going to Attend Photokina 2020
Sep 192019

Photokina is still the world’s leading imaging expo, but changes to its structure and a struggling industry may be pushing participants away. In a press release published to the expo’s website, the trade show’s organizer Koelnmesse revealed that Nikon, Leica and Olympus have all chosen to skip Photokina 2020.

The announcement strikes a grim-but-hopeful note, under the headline “Photokina 2020: An Industry in Transformation, a Decisive Chance for the Future.”

Stand: Leica, Halle2.2

“The imaging industry is currently undergoing massive changes, which also have an impact on Photokina as the industry’s leading trade fair – and this in a dimension never seen before,” begins the text. “While on the one hand the classic camera market reports strongly declining sales and turnover figures, the enjoyment of photography continues to grow – with a positive effect on the demand for pictures.”

Sony FS7 Price Drop – Camera Body Available for $5,998

Gear  Comments Off on Sony FS7 Price Drop – Camera Body Available for $5,998
Sep 172019

Shortly after Sony FX9 announcement, the Sony FS7 camera body received a significant price drop. It is now $1,500 cheaper, so the price for the body only is currently $5,998 at our partner stores B&H and CVP. Even though announced in 2014, the Sony FS7 still is a very popular and very widely used camera and in my opinion still counts as a good investment in 2019.

Buy link: Sony PXW-FS7 XDCAM Super 35 Camera Was: $7,498.00  Now: $5,998.00 (Savings: $1,500.00)

Just few days ago Sony announced their new full-frame cinema camera Sony FX9. We already published two articles about the new camera – Sony FX9 announcement with interview and all the camera’s specs and Sony FX9 hands-on and footage. Although Sony says the FX9 is not a successor to the FS7, its announcement already affected the price of this Super35 camera.

Cinematography, Gear  Comments Off on Yashica Unveils Three 35mm Cameras and Two New Films

Yashica’s Y35 digiFilm camera drummed up a great deal of excitement on Kickstarter but was universally panned by reviewers and early adopters when it finally launched in 2018. Apparently unfazed, Yashica just returned to Kickstarter with plans to launch three new film cameras and two new films.

The project is called “Absolute,” and it’ll be rolled out in three “episodes” for the three cameras.

More Canon Mirrorless Cameras Coming In 2015!?

Gear, News  Comments Off on More Canon Mirrorless Cameras Coming In 2015!?
Mar 122015

EOS_650_square_011-650x650

We heard that 2015 could be theyear of the mirrorless’ for Canon, but after the launch of the new EOS M3, and its exclusion from the North American market, that seemed to all be a bunch of crap. But now we are hearing that Canon may not be done yet. Could we have more mirrorless options from Canon on the way?

According to a new rumor report over on Mirrorless Rumors, a source has told them that Canon will have 4 mirrorless cameras launched by the time 2015 is over. We have had one so far (the EOS M3), so that leaves three more releases in the remaining months. But wait! Another source clarified that at least one of those mirrorless options was a 4K camcorder, so let’s remove that from our calculations as well – which means that we could have one or two more mirrorless camera releases in 2015.

Could one of them be a full frame mirrorless to compete with the Sony a7 series? Or maybe a vintage-styled EOS M to compete with the Fujifilm cameras? At this point, we really don’t know what it is we will be getting out of Canon, just that (grain of salt applied) one or two more mirrorless options are on the way this year.
