The Kandao QooCam is a handheld 360 and 180 3D VR camera that creates great looking VR video for social media. Check out our Kandao QooCam review and test videos.

Kandao is one of the most innovative players in the VR camera space at the moment. This is an increasingly contested and fast developing market at the cutting edge of computational photography’s disruptive infiltration towards the mainstream.

The QooCam comes from the makers of the Obsidian Go, Obsidian R and Obsidian S 8K and high speed 360 VR cameras. We’ve covered a number of recent developments from Kandao here on cinema5D including the recent 8K VR live streaming demonstrated at IBC. We also covered the announcement of the QooCam back in May.

Before getting too deep, here are the sample videos shot with the QooCam.

Below are the videos I shot while in Istanbul and in L.A. The top video is 3D 180, and the bottom video is 360. If you’re not set up for the full VR viewing experience, I recommend watching these on your phone rather than desktop, you’ll be able to move your phone around as a virtual window on the scene.

At IBC 2016, Indiecam presented their version of a VR camera. True to their roots, the nakedEYE is a small, lightweight and all-manual VR RAW camera. 

Austria-based Indiecam develops and manufactures high-quality miniature action cameras for filmmakers. Their RAW action cameras have been used on dozens of famous productions, like Ron Howard’s Rush or Into the Heart of the Sea.

The Indiecam nakedEYE is the logical next step when it comes to miniature RAW cameras. But according to managing director Raphael Barth this VR RAW Camera is just the first step in their move towards Virtual Reality Acquisition.

While a resolution of 4K is rather limiting when it comes to a full 360° VR image, the intriguing attributes about the Indiecam nakedEYE VR RAW Camera are:

  • Full Manual Controls
  • Global Shutter
  • High Dynamic Range and good low-light performance
  • 12-bit CinemaDNG RAW
  • 2 lens construction for an easy workflow
  • 2x 2K square sensors (4K 60p)

To me this looks like a very important step in professional VR production. While this seems to be the “Digital Bolex of VR cameras”, it surely is heading in the right direction for larger formats to come.

There’s a small lie that’s snowballing into a huge lie when it comes to 360-degree videos and virtual reality.

You see, with the rise of VR, there’s been an inevitable rush to produce content for it. People want stuff to watch in their expensive VR headsets, and many content creators and companies are arguably misleading consumers with 360-degree videos (and cameras that shoot 360-degree videos).

Yes, most 360-degree videos are viewable in a VR headset and allow for omnidirectional viewing experiences, but they aren’t real VR. They’re still just flat 2D videos with no depth to them.

But after taking a look at several 360-degree videos shot with the Vuze, I’m now convinced that for any content to be classified truly as VR content, it needs to have 3D stereoscopic depth.

HumanEyes’ Vuze is an $800 VR camera that’s slightly larger than a Roku or Apple TV media streaming box. Unlike other 360-degree cameras that are mistakenly referred to as “VR cameras” that only have one or two spherical lenses, the Vuze has eight cameras — two on each of its four edges. Each camera records in full HD.

Palmer Luckey has never used an Oculus Rift.

That’s what the founder of Oculus keeps telling himself as he unboxes the commercial version of the virtual reality system he invented. Opens the package. Takes out the few elements—the headset, the single cable that connects it to a computer, the small cylindrical infrared camera that tracks it in space. Runs through the setup. And finally puts on the headset and takes stock of his surroundings.

Luckey has been doing this same thing over and over and over again, on different computers in different rooms on Facebook’s campus. He’s spent days repeating the sequence, putting himself in the shoes of a customer who has just received a Rift.

If you thought that Samsung‘s Gear VR headset, which was made together with Oculus, was just a temporary distraction for the Korean consumer electronics company, you might have just been proven wrong. At Sundance, one of the most notable film fests in the world, Samsung took the opportunity to announce that it is opening up a studio in New York, located where Samsung’s US marketing team already works in, with the sole purpose of creating immersive experiences. In short, VR content that will most likely blossom this year. Or at least fans and believers of VR would like it to.

Virtual reality is nothing really new. What’s new, however, is the commoditization of hardware that was in the past only available to the most hardcore, or most affluent, of computer scientists. But even back in the day when VR was hyped, the problem has always been the same: the amount of available content, or the lack of it.

Back in May, Google announced “JUMP“, a new technology standard aimed at creating fully immersive content for virtual reality. At the time, Google showed off a demo camera rig that utilized over a 16 separate GoPros. The folks over at GoPro have finally decided to release a production version of the apparatus that’ll be available for purchase. Called the Odyssey panoramic capture rig, it features 16 synchronized GoPro HERO4 Black cameras recording 8K video at 30fps.

Virtual reality startup Jaunt is getting ready to build its own cameraJaunt announced a new series of camera systems code-named Neo Tuesday that promises 360-degree high dynamic range video capture for cinematic virtual reality (VR) experiences.

Jaunt has been in the business of producing cinematic VR since 2013. But up until now, it has used custom rigs made from off-the-shelf cameras and 3-D printed components to capture VR video, which has had a number of downsides. For one, the cameras are not synchronized, making both recording and processing content cumbersome.

But Jaunt’s director of hardware engineering Koji Gardiner also said that most off-the-shelf cameras have inadequate image sensors for VR. A 360-degree camera captures the entire scene, making it close to impossible to hide a light kit from a viewer’s eye, which is why most VR is being shot with natural light. “Lighting is hard for VR,” Gardiner said. That’s why the Neo systems use a custom lens design and large image sensors to capture more light.

A number of companies have built their own camera rigs for VR, with some embracing very expensive, high-resolution cameras while others simply use GoPros or other action cams. There’s also intense debate about the number of cameras used in a VR rig. Google recently introduced its own camera rig called Jump that’s based on 16 GoPro cameras.

NHK is also planning public demonstrations of 8K—16 times the resolution of HD–in Los Angeles and New York.

Japan’s government and NHK are bullish about giving Japan a broadcast system that supports ultra-sharp 8K — 16 times the resolution of HD — in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. And now, Japan’s public broadcaster is not ruling out virtual reality as a possible future use of the format.

“Virtual Reality is possible [with 8K] in the future on smaller screen such as Oculus Rift displays,” Narichika Hamaguchi, a senior manager at NHK’s research lab, told The Hollywood Reporter.

For broadcasting, NHK finds that the bigger the screen, the better for visual perception. So at NAB, it was demoing its 8K images on TVs larger than 70-inches, as well as in a theater presentation. But it was also showing a smaller 13-inch OLED screen that was research work from SEL, signaling an effort to bring the format to smaller screens for additional uses, potentially VR.

Meanwhile, NHK is planning public demonstrations of 8K broadcasting in Los Angeles and New York. They will be held this summer when NHK tests its broadcasting system during the FIFA Women’s World Cup, which is being held June 6-July 5 in Canada.

It’s also planning trials at the 2016 Rio Olympics, and aims to start offering limited 8K services in Japan during 2018, when the FIFA World Cup will be held in Russia and Olympics in South Korea.

From the content standpoint, NHK is currently focused on live broadcasting, particularly sports, and has already tested the system at big global events including the 2012 London Olympics as well as last year’s Sochi Olympics and FIFA World Cup. The ultra-sharp picture puts the viewer in the stadium with more detail that currently possible, allowing them to see more of the drama from the players and spectators, and not just in close ups.

Bublcam the Toronto-based hardware startup that has created the first spherical, 360-degree consumer camera, is ready to ship its product next month.

The startup was formerly part of the Canadian Film Centre’s (CFC) ideaBOOST accelerator program, and recently launched pre-orders for the product. It’ll start shipping in early September, continuing into October.

Bubl’s current collaboration with Google allows anyone with a Bublcam to upload spherical photos directly to Google Maps, StreetView and Google+. Other features include real-time image stitching, self-calibration and image stabilization, a four-camera, tetrahedral design for zero blind spots and live video streaming.
